The EL Haynes Mountain Lions suffered a heartbreaking defeat in penalty kicks in the first round of the 2nd Annual Petworth Cup.  Washinton Latin defeated Haynes 4 to 2 on penalty kicks after ting 1-1 in regulation and overtime.  In a hard fought battle played at Latin, both teams created many chances that hit posts, were saved by keepers, or cleared off of the endline by players.  

Haynes came out strong in the first half and repeatedly created offensive opportunities. Midfielders A. Rezene and B. Gebrie continued to win balls in the middle and distribute them to wingers Y. Sipowa, J. Argueta  and I. Uceda .  Haynes put the first tally on the board when Sophomore R. Martinez settled the ball in the midfield, passed it up to teammate M. Rezene (So.) who flicked it back on to Martinez who finished it with a half volley into the upper right hand corner of the net.  

Haynes defense played solid throughout the match, including great saves by sophomore keeper K. Bonilla, playing in his varsity debut.  

In the second half Latin came charging out and pressured Haynes.  During one attack, a foul that occurred inside the penalty area was committed, leading to a Latin penalty kick that was converted.  Tied 1-1, both teams pushed several opportunities in the remaining time but were unable to put another goal on the board.

Haynes will now play in the 3rd place game against Roosevelt SHS on Saturday, September 13th, at 9:30 AM at Roosevelt Senior High School.
